Do I need to be a prefect?

Hi I’m quite an able student who didn’t get a prefect role for this year. But I have good EC as I’m currently doing the Fuke of Edinburgh gold award. Is it still possible for me to get into top USA universities?

Definitely don’t need to be a prefect. It’s certainly helpful for demonstrating leadership ability, but by no means the be-all and end-all.

Hi RefSeph,

Completely possible for you to get into top US schools without a prefect position. Very much depends on

  1. Your standardized test scores (SAT/ACT)
  2. What your ECs are, and how seriously you’ve become involved in them
  3. Outside awards or recognition (for academic or EC stuff)
  4. How you have performed academically in school and exams, and what academic program(s) you’re engaged in (Cambridge exams, IB, AP, etc)
  5. Other ‘intangibles’ (including your background)
